Christopher Mcquarrie started writing when he was 12-years old, originally wanting to be a novelist. McQuarrie attended film school while working for a detective agency while providing security at a New Jersey movie theater. Meanwhile his best friend in high school, director Bryan Singer, attended the University of Southern California Film School. In 1991, Singer asked McQuarrie to co-write the screenplay for their first film, "Public Access", which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival. The success of "Public Access" brought industry attention to the writer and directer. They then teamed up again to make "The Usual Suspects" -- which won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen in 1996. McQuarrie's directorial debut, "The Way of the Gun", starring Benicio Del Toro and Ryan Phillippe, was a box office failure.
