Script Report: ALEXANDER

Another sword-and-sandal epic appears to be on the fast track.

Producer Dino De Laurentiis has announced that GLADIATOR director Ridley Scott will direct his ALEXANDER film, and that Anthony Hopkins in a key role.

"I would like to have big stars in the secondary roles, and get an unknown actor to play the part of Alexander the Great, a unique human being who, like Christ, died at the age of 33 and had already conquered the world by the age of 22," the octogenarian De Laurentiis was quoted by Rome daily La Repubblica as saying at press conference at Italy's Giffoni Film Festival.

The Alexander project is being written by Ted Tally (Oscar-THE SILENCE OF THE LAMB) from a trilogy of historical novels by Valerio Massimo Manfredi. No word on the status of the script.
