It's looking more and more like Universal Pictures and Alphaville's THE SCORPION KING is picking up steam. Based on a character from the 2001 film THE MUMMY 2, Dwayne Johnson ("The Rock") will play a heroic peasant who becomes the first pharaoh of Egypt after taking his revenge on a marauding army that plunders his small town.

Screenwriter Jonathan Hales ("Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, The" TV) is penning the script. Chuck Russell (THE MASK) is in talks to possibly direct. Jim Jacks, Sean Daniel, and Stephen Sommers (THE MUMMY Screenwriter) will produce.

THE MUMMY RETURNS hits the big screen in May 2001 with THE SCORPING KING expected to be released by summer 2002.
