Kasden grew up in West Virginia and after high school attended University of Michigan as an education major. More interested in writing, he started out as a copyeditor. Says film critic Leonard Maltin, "Kasdan's greatest strength is his diversity; he's tackled a variety of movie genres, albeit not with total success." Kasdan broke into films working for George Lucas, cowriting "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) and then writing "Raiders of the Lost Ark" by himself. The success of his Lucas pictures gave him a shot at writing and directing his own film, "Body Heat".
