Already prognosticators are predicting who is in the lead for possible Oscar nominations. For us here at SU an early look at Best screenwriting awards is always something of interest. According to a recent poll on AwardsWatch.com the front runner for "Best Original" is BIRDMAN, a story about a washed-up action/ superhero actor Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) who decides to stage a comeback in a Broadway play. Pressure mounts as the opening nears as Riggan battles his ego and tries to win back his family, at the same time re-establishing his career and finding himself in the process. The script has four writers (Armando Bo, Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolas Giabone and Alejandro González Iñárritu) receiving credit which is unusual for a potential Oscar nominated screenplay. Usually, the more writers the greater chance for a bad script. Here's how the top Five some out according to the Poll:
- BIRDMAN
- BOYHOOD (Richard Linklater)
- THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (Wes Anderson and Hugo Guinness)
- SUFFRAGETTE (Abi Morgan)
- MR. TURNER (Mike Leigh)
