Free Rewrites Ruling Goes Against Hollywood Scribes...
May 12th, 2004
"There's no way around it -- this ruling went against us on every ground that we put forward," WGA West president Daniel Petrie Jr., who testified at the arbitration, told Reuters/Hollywood Reporter .
In this morning's report, 5 years of arbitration and struggle was wiped out when an arbitrator sided with the studios, completely rejecting a grievance brought by the WGA over free rewrites.
It's no secret that producers routinely take advantage of screenwriters during the script-revision process. Some writers feel compelled to do this work for free. It's a competitive business and the thinking is that a free rewrite today means something down the road, well this isn't always the case.
The Feb. 2 ruling comes as the guild prepares to negotiate a new industry contract.
