WILL SMITH/MIKE NEWELL CONSIDER GRISHAM'S 'JURY'

According to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER Will Smith and Mike Newell (FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, DONNIE BRASCO) are circling the long-delayed project RUNAWAY JURY (check on my script review). The script, which is based on a best-selling book by John Grisham, has gone through many versions and writers. It will be interesting to see if Smith and Newell make the latest version of the script (by Matthew Chapman), which was turned into a semi-comedy. Or if theyll have yet another screenwriter take a whack. I have to say, for once this is perfect casting. Will Smith can play both blank-slate nobody to get on the jury and pinch-lipped glee as he manipulates and mind-screws the defenses lawyers and investigators. I love Newells BRASCO, but he did ruin a great script by the Charles brothers PUSHING TIN. Well just have to stay tuned. Good bit of movie news, in any event.
