October Boxoffice Sets Record...
November 4th, 2002
Buena Vista's SWEET HOME ALABAMA and Universal's RED DRAGON lead the way at the boxoffice as admissions totals for the month soared to record heights. The national boxoffice rang up a stellar $690.4 million, up 21% from the previous record of $570.6 million, which was set last year. It marks the first time the national gross for October surpassed $600 million. Despite the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, last October posted the biggest boxoffice ever reported for the month, but admissions were lackluster -- only fourth-best at the time, likely because of slightly higher ticket prices. Ticket price increases this year, though, have for the most part been relatively modest. Estimated admissions for October rocketed to 118.4 million, representing a robust jump of 19% from the 99.1 million recorded last October and bettering by a solid 12% the record of 105.7 million set in 1998.
