SPIDER-MAN opens big, but what did you expect?

The agony and wait were over, and man what a turn-out for SPIDER-MAN. The highly anticipated comic-book hero movie has set a record for the largest three-day gross ever cashing in at $114 million. Every year in North America the lucrative summer movie season seems to start a little earlier than the last. The Columbia Pictures flick kicked butt and smashed to pieces the old three-day record of $90.3 million, set last November by HARRY POTTER (took five days). The audience seems to have been evenly split between males and females, and between viewers aged over and under 25, Blake said.

Here's the breakdown from the associate press. SPIDER-MAN grossed $43.7 million on Saturday broke HARRY POTTER's single day record of $33.5 million.
