Continued Boxoffice Boom means more Mediocrity
March 26th, 2002
It's interesting to see how the industry constantly takes the expected and turns it into a victory cry. Every year the boxoffice rakes in more money, and every year studio heads claim victory. The quality of movies is in a decline regardless of what the receipts say. Even the Internet continues to see more people log on every day and still no one is making money. They're missing the point. Even with these big numbers there are still studios in serious financial trouble.
The boxoffice took in $1.74 billion during the winter season, a 9% increase on last year's record $1.59 billion. The estimated admissions for the period tops the 300 million mark for the first time. The 2002 winter season ended March 21.
The major studios released 23 films during the season in 2001 and 2002, but there were four fewer independent releases in the market (42 this year compared with 46 last year).
