Yet another actor becomes a director
February 19th, 2002
The talented Don Cheadle will make his directorial debut on the adaptation of Elmore Leonard's latest novel TISHOMINGO BLUES.
The book is a straight comedy, like GET SHORTY, and has something to do with drug dealers, circus high driver, and a re-enactment of the civil war. (I have the book, which just came out, but haven't had time to read it yet.)
Anyone else disturbed by the fact that every day there is a new announcement that an actor will direct? Actors are going to put directors out of business. Since most actors write, too, nowadays -- and now they direct -- they're basically pushing everyone else out of their way.
As for this book -- though I haven't read it yet -- I'm starting to think Leonard should stay on the page. The cool cadence of his words and the haphazard, flow-with-the-wind plots of Leonard's books lose something on the screen.
