Wells to step down as Writers Guild president
June 25th, 2001
By Dave McNary
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) Once will be enough for John Wells, the busy television producer who has decided against seeking a second two-year term as president of the Writers Guild of America West (WGAW).
Wells spent most of his term as public point man for the guild's contract campaign and negotiations in addition to being an executive producer of ``ER,'' ``The West Wing (news - web sites)'' and ``Third Watch.'' He's also overseeing a pair of features in production, developing several others and preparing to executive produce ``Citizen Baines'' for CBS this fall.
Wells, who was on vacation and not available for comment, also became a father for the second time on May 3, the day before negotiations successfully concluded, averting a strike that could have plunged Los Angeles into recession.
Wells was elected two years ago on a get-tough platform in the wake of dissatisfaction within the guild over its lack militancy at the bargaining table. His election, along with that of Screen Actors Guild (news - web sites) counterpart William Daniels, was a key early signal that a two-pronged strike might hit Hollywood this summer.
