Writers and Producers to Resume Talks...

The contract talks between Writers and Producers broke off March 1 after weeks of discussion without an agreement being reached. The writers' current contract with the movie and TV companies expires at 12:01 a.m. on May 2nd. The Writers Guild of America will resume its stalled negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers next Tuesday, April 17, both sides have said.

Cheryl Rhoden, communications director for the WGA, West, said the guild moved to re-open the talks. But she said the union was standing by its previously stated bargaining positions. The writers and companies have been at odds over demands by both sides for revisions to formulas covering a wide range of residuals paid for TV shows, and over similar payments for films distributed on videocassettes and DVDs.

Though the resumption of talks is a good sign, it still does not signal a major breakthrough in the labor stand-off. Quotes in the trades certainly do not warm the heart to the hope that an agreement will be reached.
