Script Report/Review: GATES OF FIRE
October 4th, 2000

I've heard of this project and am very excited about it. David Self (13 DAYS) has already turned in the first draft of the script for GATES OF FIRE, which is an adaptation of the acclaimed historical novel by Steven Pressfield. My friend Stax has checked in with an early script review.
GATES OF FIRE deals with the historic and famous battle of Thermopylae in August of 480 BC. It's known by historians as 'the three hundred at the pass.' I studied military history in graduate school, so I would know. I hope to be getting my hands on a copy of this script in a few weeks; so look for that review in a month or so.
The battle at Thermopylae consisted of Xerxes, the Persian emperor and his army and navy versus the Greeks, more specifically the Spartans (Sparta) led by Leonidas the Spartan king. Heavily out-numbered Leonidas and his band of less than 300 held off the Persians long enough for the population of Athens to evacuate to the island of Salamis.
History would show that the Persians were an army of intimidation, as their bark was always bigger than their bite. They would come on to the battle scene in such a way, with such a distinct and evil look and sound, which in itself was frightening. Don't get me wrong, the Persians were tough customers, but the Greeks were far more brave and determined in battle.
Anyway, enough of the history lesson. George Clooney's Maysville Pictures will produce the project with a favorite of mine directing, Michael Mann. Word also has it that Bruce Willis wants to play the lead in GATES OF FIRE.
