WGA Strike Prep. Sparks Buying Frenzy
August 9th, 2000
Variety is reporting that the recent preparations by the WGAw for a work stoppage next year has prompted both studios and prod co's to buy up and stockpile scripts. Especially active are Disney, Columbia and Revolution Pictures. Disney recently purchased "Cassanova", a spec script from Kimberly Simi for mid-six figures with a blind script commitment for her next project, and both Columbia and Revolution are greenlighting pictures almost immediately after purchase. Roy Lee of iFilm pro - an online spec tracking service - reports that spec scripts from agents and high-level managers has shot from aprox 20/week to in excess of 50. "Everyone wants to stockpile as much as they can -- especially scripts that are more likely to get made and not impossible to develop." Lee reports. While this makes it a seller's market for writers, a well placed agent told Variety that the studios are ". . .buying scripts they just may never make."
